A three days National Bariatric & Advance Laparoscopic Surgery Workshop kicked off at Medical Teaching Institute Hayatabad Medical Complex (MTI-HMC) Peshawar on Wednesday. The workshop is aimed at introducing Laparoscopic Surgeries in HMC Peshawar as a permanent feature. In order to get certified surgeons in Bariatric and Laparoscopic Surgery HMC has organized this training workshop by inviting well known surgeons of the country as master trainers. During the workshop eight operations will take place and trainee surgeons will be given an opportunity of learning through observation and live question answer sessions. Master trainers of the workshop included Prof. Mumtaz Meher of Jinnah Hospital Karachi, Prof. Ghulam Siddique- Head of Surgery Department Shifa International Islamabad, Prof. Faisal Murad from Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi, Prof. Farooq Afzal, Head of Surgery Department Lahore General Hospital, Prof. Dr. Tahir Younus from Shalimar Hospital Lahore, Dr. Kashif from Maroof Hospital Islamabad and Surgeons of Lady Reading and Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar. Moreover, Prof. Dr. Shehzad Akbar, Medical Director HMC and surgeons of the HMC will also join the session. Explaining details of the workshop, Senior Registrar and Surgeon Dr. Nadir Shah said that 110 consultants and trainee surgeons are expected to join and will take benefit from the workshop. Medical Director MTI-HMC said that "The Surgery Department of HMC is very eager to experiment and introduce advanced techniques in the province. This would be an achievement of HMC to add this surgery as a permanent component” he further added that “Out of province private surgeries of the same have a cost of 0.6 to 0.8 Million which will be provided free once we introduce the in-house surgeries at HMC".
