(Besides the above a host of Trainee Med Officers, Medical Officers and House Officers are attached to the Unit)
The Surgical Unit - Hayatabad Medical Complex is a 70 bedded facility recognized for undergraduate (KGMC) and postgraduate (CPSP) training.
Training facilities also exist for interns of foreign medical institutions.
FUTURE AIMS:
The unit is striving to establish a High Dependency Unit for which a chamber on its premises has been reserved.
A request has been placed for establishment of a Surgical Endoscopy suite.
SURGICAL: SERVICES
Expertise are available for specialized procedures with the unit catering regularly for the following surgeries:
Endo-urology
Laparoscopic urology (renal and supra renal)
Laparoscopic general surgical procedures (cholecystectomy, appendicectomy, splenectomy, hernia repair)
Use of linear/ circular staplers are encouraged in intestinal surgery
CLINICAL WORK:
16 beds are reserved for Emergency round the clock, seven days a week.
SURGICAL: RESEARCH AND ACADEMICS
Concurrent Research and Academic activities are strongly encouraged and a structured training / teaching programme is maintained for junior doctors and medical students, details of which are as follows

An IT room with 4 computers and 24 hrs DSL connection is available for
academic use by the doctors working in the unit.
Facilities are available for Hands on Laparoscopic training on simulators.
Besides the above day to day activities the Surgical unit in HMC organizes FCPS II short intensive course every 4-6 months in collaboration with CPSP.
Professor Dr Mazhar Khan and Asst Prof Dr Shehzad Akbar Khan are faculty members of the Primary Trauma Care Foundation Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa and regularly organize and participate in PTC courses around the province.
