INTRODUCTION:

Department of General Medicine have 3 Units, Medical A, Medical B & Medical C. Department of General Medicine have total 107 Beds. The department presently have a total of 13 faculties who are undergraduate teachers as well as supervisors for the postgraduate training. The objectives of the department of general Medicine:

• Patient care for the elective medical cases presenting to the general medical OPDs, emergency patients presenting to the ER department and ( in the current scenario, the covid-19 patients presenting to the Covid-19 OPD and the isolation wards).
• Teaching and training of the postgraduate medical trainees.
• Teaching and training of the undergraduate medical students.
• Research, encouraging the consultants to select innovative aspects/topics of medicine for research and dissertation purposes.
• IBP practice by the medical consultants as their private practice and for generating revenue to the hospital to cope with the increasing financial needs of the hospital.

•Introduction

• The Medical Department of Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC), Peshawar, plays a pivotal role in catering to the healthcare needs of patients while also serving as a key training ground for undergraduate medical students, particularly from Khyber Girls Medical College (KGMC). KGMC, an exclusive institution for female medical students in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, collaborates with HMC to provide comprehensive clinical training and educational opportunities. The department is structured to manage a high volume of patient care while simultaneously engaging in education and research, contributing significantly to both healthcare delivery and academic progress in the region.

•Functions of the Medical Department

•Inpatient Care

• The Medical Department provides extensive inpatient services, admitting patients with a wide range of internal medicine conditions. The hospital beds are divided across three functional units, each supervised by a team consisting of professors, associate professors, assistant professors, specialist registrars, and nursing staff. Each unit offers round-the-clock care, ensuring that patients receive high-quality treatment tailored to their specific needs. Regular ward rounds and case reviews are carried out, with specialists making decisions on diagnosis, treatment plans, and follow-up care.

•Outpatient Care

• Outpatient services are one of the primary modes of patient interaction in the department. The outpatient department (OPD) operates daily clinics, where patients from across the province consult for various medical conditions. Physicians at different levels of the hierarchy—ranging from specialists to trainees—manage these consultations. The medical staff assesses and manages cases involving chronic conditions, routine check-ups, and follow-ups, ensuring continuity of care.

• The medical department is also responsible for providing emergency services. A dedicated team handles acute internal medicine emergencies such as strokes, myocardial infarctions, severe infections, and other life-threatening conditions. • - Endoscopies: Both diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopies are routinely performed for conditions like gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, and tumors.

• - Dialysis: For patients with renal failure, the department provides dialysis services. Both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are available, ensuring comprehensive renal care.
