Our department is renowned for its leadership in ophthalmic care, offering specialized services in areas such as vitreoretina, pediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, cornea, medical retina, trauma, diagnostic ophthalmology, and orbit & oculoplastic surgery. We are proud to have contributed significantly to the healthcare sector by producing a large number of ophthalmologists who excel in both general ophthalmology and subspecialties. INTRODUCTION

The Department of Ophthalmology at Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) stands as a center of excellence for comprehensive eye care services. With a commitment to high-quality patient care, education, and research, we aim to be at the forefront of ophthalmic advancements.

Our team of highly skilled consultants, specialist registrars, and allied health professionals work collaboratively to provide a range of services from basic eye examinations to advanced surgical interventions. These services include:

  • Vitreoretinal care
  • Pediatric ophthalmology
  • Orbital and oculoplastic surgery
  • Medical retina
  • Corneal and external eye disease management
  • Diagnostic ophthalmology
  • Glaucoma care

The department is structured into three units, all dedicated to delivering evidence-based care in alignment with the mission of MTI-HMC. This holistic approach encompasses all facets of eye care, from diagnosis through treatment and rehabilitation, ensuring comprehensive management of ophthalmic health.

Scope of Services

Clinical Services

Outpatient consultations and surgeries are available five days a week, while inpatient care is continuously accessible, ensuring seamless patient management. Our clinical services are designed to meet the needs of both routine and specialized eye care, including:

  • Outpatient Clinics
    • General Ophthalmology Clinics
    • Subspecialty Clinics (Vitreoretina, Orbit & Oculoplastics, Medical Retina, Glaucoma, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Cornea, and Anterior Segment)
    • Refraction, Orthoptic assessment, Contact lens, Amblyopia Therapy, and Low Vision Rehabilitation services
  • Inpatient and Day Care Services
    • The department is equipped with 86 beds including two examination rooms that cater to inpatients round the clock
    • Well-equipped operating theaters providing services such as Cataract, Orbit & Eyelids, Glaucoma, Retinal, and Corneal surgeries
  • Emergency Eye Care
    • 24/7 emergency eye care services for trauma, acute infections, and other urgent ophthalmic conditions
  • Diagnostic and Imaging Services
    • State-of-the-art equipment for diagnostics, including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Standard Automated Perimetry, Biometry, Ophthalmic Ultrasound, Fluorescein Angiography, and Fundus Photography
    • Advanced diagnostic procedures for conditions like Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration, and Glaucoma
  • Laser and Injections Services
    • Laser treatment for Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinopathy Of Prematurity, Glaucoma, and Retinal Tears
    • Intravitreal injections for retinal diseases such as Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)

Educational Activities

As a teaching department, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive training for the next generation of ophthalmologists. Our structured educational programs include:

    • Comprehensive ophthalmology residency training accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP)
  • Fellowships
    • Advanced fellowship programs in Vitreoretina, Orbit & Oculoplastics, and Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) designed to enhance subspecialty skills
  • Clinical Attachments/Short-term Fellowships
    • We provide short-term clinical attachments of three to six months in various sub-specialties like Vitreoretina, Orbit & Oculoplastics, Medical Retina, Glaucoma, Pediatric Ophthalmology, and Anterior Segment
  • Continuous Medical Education (CME)
    • Regular seminars, workshops, and clinical meetings to promote knowledge-sharing and stay updated with advancements in ophthalmology
  • Courses for Allied Health Personnel
    • We also provide practical training facilities to OTC students of Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology

    • For optometrists graduated from Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology

Future Plans

As the Department of Ophthalmology at Hayatabad Medical Complex continues to grow and evolve, we are committed to further enhancing our clinical, educational, and research capabilities. Our future plans include:

  • Expansion of Subspecialty Services
    • Starting new fellowships in Glaucoma, Cornea & External Eye Disease, and Cataract & Refractive Surgery, which will be accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP).
    • Introduction of new subspecialty clinics, including Uveitis, Ocular Oncology, and Neuro-Ophthalmology, to provide comprehensive care for more complex conditions.
    • Establishment of a Cornea Transplant Unit in collaboration with Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology to address the increasing demand for corneal surgeries and improve outcomes for patients with severe corneal disorders.
  • Upgrading Surgical Facilities
    • Modernization of operating theaters with the latest technologies such as robotic-assisted eye surgery and advanced intraoperative imaging for enhanced precision in procedures.
    • Expansion of the Vitreo-Retinal Surgery Unit with advanced equipment for managing retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, and other complex retinal conditions.
  • Enhancement of Educational Programs
    • Expansion of fellowship programs to include more subspecialties and collaboration with international institutions for short-term observerships and exchange programs.
  • Research and Innovation
    • Development of a Research and Innovation Hub within the department, focused on exploring cutting-edge treatment modalities such as gene therapy, stem cell therapy, and artificial intelligence (AI) in ophthalmic diagnostics and care.
    • Increase participation in multicenter international clinical trials and establish a biobank for retinal and corneal diseases to support future genetic and molecular research.
  • Patient Education and Awareness Programs
    • Launch of comprehensive public awareness campaigns on common eye diseases, focusing on preventive care and early detection of conditions like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts.
    • Creation of a patient education center within the department, offering resources and support for patients and families on managing chronic eye conditions.
